Zevenwacht Syrah 2022
Zevenwacht Wine Estate is situated on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, where cooling maritime influences from nearby False Bay help shape wines of freshness, elegance and varietal clarity. With a winemaking history spanning more than three centuries, the estate has earned a reputation for producing wines that express both place and variety with precision and restraint. The Syrah vineyards are planted on south-westerly facing slopes between 230 and 250 metres above sea level on decomposed granite soils. These cooler sites encourage slower ripening, allowing the grapes to develop the peppery spice and aromatic complexity for which Stellenbosch Syrah is known. The 2022 vintage was harvested at relatively moderate sugar levels to preserve freshness and varietal character before spending 12 months in French oak, adding texture without overshadowing the fruit.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a vibrant crimson edge.
Nose: Aromatic and layered, showing white pepper, blackberry, cranberry and raspberry aromas alongside hints of violet, fynbos and subtle savoury spice.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with flavours of blackberry, red berry fruit and plum supported by a thread of savoury spice. Fine-grained tannins provide structure while balanced acidity keeps the wine fresh and focused. The oak influence is subtle, contributing texture and complexity rather than overt sweetness.
Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of cracked black pepper, dark berries and delicate floral nuances.
- Food Pairing : Zevenwacht Syrah 2022 is particularly well suited to grilled and slow-cooked meats. Its peppery spice and fine tannin structure make it an excellent match for Karoo lamb chops, venison, beef short ribs and slow-roasted springbok. The wine's freshness prevents richer dishes from feeling heavy, while its savoury character complements smoky flavours from the braai. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto or roasted Mediterranean vegetables, where the earthy flavours echo the wine's subtle spice and complexity.
