Protea Shiraz 2023
Produced by Anthonij Rupert Wines, the Protea range reflects the diversity of the Western Cape through a collection of approachable, terroir-driven wines. The grapes for Protea Shiraz are sourced from selected vineyard sites across the Cape, including areas with decomposed granite, sandy and loamy soils that suit Shiraz particularly well. Careful site selection allows the winemaking team to craft a consistent style that balances ripe fruit, freshness and structure. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal purity, followed by maturation that adds texture and subtle complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The result is a modern South African Shiraz that is generous, approachable and unmistakably Cape in character.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby red with youthful purple flashes at the rim.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic notes of ripe plum, blackberry and dark berry fruit lead the way, followed by hints of violet, cracked pepper, warm spice and a subtle smoky nuance.
Â
Palate:
Soft and rounded on entry, revealing layers of juicy plum, blackberry and blackcurrant. The texture is supple and generous, with ripe tannins providing structure while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and balanced. Gentle spice and savoury undertones add depth without overwhelming the fruit.
Â
Finish:
Long and satisfying, finishing with lingering dark fruit, subtle pepper spice and a faint smoky, flinty note that adds interest and persistence.
- Food Pairing : The generous fruit and supple texture of Protea Shiraz 2023 make it a natural partner for grilled beef burgers, flame-grilled lamb chops, slow-cooked beef stew and smoky barbecue dishes. The wine's ripe dark fruit complements charred, savoury flavours, while its freshness prevents richer dishes from feeling heavy. It also pairs surprisingly well with mushroom risotto or roasted vegetables, where the wine's spice and earthy nuances echo the flavours on the plate.
