L'Avenir Provenance Merlot 2024 (Top 10)
L'Avenir Vineyards lies on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, an area well suited to Merlot thanks to its combination of mountain influence, varied soils and a climate that allows the grapes to develop flavour while retaining freshness. The estate's northern-facing vineyard sites provide the fruit for the Provenance Merlot, with the 2024 vintage benefiting from relatively low yields and good fruit intensity and natural acidity. Winemaker Dirk Coetzee describes the 2024 Provenance Merlot as an elegant, softer expression of Stellenbosch Merlot. The wine shows a restrained, classic French influence, with carefully integrated fruit and oak rather than relying on extraction or overt wood character. The result is a Merlot that places freshness, texture and varietal expression at the centre of the wine.
Colour: Deep ruby with a youthful, vibrant appearance.
Nose: Initially quite shy, gradually revealing fresh red and dark berry fruit alongside subtle incense-like French oak. With time in the glass, the aromatics become more expressive, showing the restrained, savoury character associated with classic Merlot.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated yet elegant fruit. Fresh cherry and red berry flavours are supported by silky tannins and lively acidity, giving the wine a smooth, refined texture. The oak is present but integrated, adding subtle spice and savoury complexity rather than dominating the fruit. The overall style is restrained and food-friendly, with good concentration without excessive weight.
Finish: Long and graceful, with fresh cherry, red berry fruit and gentle oak spice lingering on the palate. The combination of fruit purity, acidity and fine tannins suggests that the wine will become increasingly harmonious with bottle age.
- Food Pairing : The fresh acidity, silky tannins and restrained fruit make this Merlot particularly versatile with grilled sirloin, lamb chops, roast chicken with herbs, mushroom pasta or a slow-cooked beef dish. Its freshness cuts through richer foods, while the soft tannins complement meat without overpowering it. The subtle oak and savoury character also work especially well with earthy mushroom and herb flavours.
