Ken Forrester FMC Chenin Blanc 2024 (Top 10)
Ken Forrester Wines, set on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, is widely regarded as a cornerstone of South Africa’s modern Chenin Blanc story. The estate, originally granted in 1689, combines deep Cape heritage with a forward-thinking approach to vineyard and cellar work.
The FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin) is drawn primarily from low-yielding bush vines planted in the 1970s, rooted in decomposed granite and Clovelly soils. The proximity to the Atlantic brings cooling influences that help retain acidity and structure. Grapes are harvested in multiple passes to capture varying ripeness levels, then naturally fermented in French oak (around 50% new) and matured on lees for extended periods. This layered approach reflects a clear Old World influence, with texture and longevity prioritised over simple fruit expression.
Colour:
Deep straw with a golden hue, indicating both concentration and oak maturation.
Nose:
Dried apricot and baked apple lead, followed by honey, vanilla and citrus peel. Subtle notes of spice, toasted nuts and a hint of crème brûlée add depth.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a rounded, almost waxy texture. Layers of stone fruit, candied lemon and gentle oak spice are balanced by fresh acidity. The wine shows both richness and precision, with a mineral thread keeping it focused.
Finish:
Long and evolving, with lingering honeyed fruit, spice and a savoury, slightly saline edge.
- Food Pairing : The Ken Forrester FMC Chenin Blanc 2024 has the weight and complexity to handle richly flavoured dishes. It pairs particularly well with butter-poached lobster or grilled prawns, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness while echoing the sweetness of the seafood. Roast pork with crackling or glazed gammon also works well, as the wine’s honeyed notes complement savoury depth. For something more aromatic, try it with mildly spiced Cape Malay curries - the balance of fruit and texture softens spice while maintaining freshness. Creamy poultry dishes, like chicken in a mushroom or tarragon sauce, are another natural fit, matching the wine’s layered, textured palate.
