Kanonkop Pinotage 2023
Kanonkop Wine Estate, located on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading red wine producers. The estate has been family-owned for four generations and is particularly known for elevating Pinotage to world-class status.
The vineyards are rooted in decomposed granite soils with high clay content, which help retain moisture and support slow, even ripening. Combined with cooling Atlantic breezes, this results in grapes with concentration and natural balance. Traditional winemaking methods remain central to Kanonkop’s philosophy, including fermentation in open-top concrete tanks and maturation in French oak, producing wines that prioritise structure, depth and longevity over immediate softness.
Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape, has long been a cornerstone of the estate, with Kanonkop playing a significant role in establishing its global reputation for quality and ageing potential.
Colour:
Deep ruby to purple, with a dense, youthful core.
Nose:
Rich aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry lead, followed by notes of mocha, vanilla and a hint of smoky earth. Subtle hints of banana leaf and spice add complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied with firm, structured tannins and a broad, textured mouthfeel. Dark fruit flavours dominate, supported by savoury undertones and well-integrated oak. There is a balance between richness and freshness, giving the wine both weight and definition.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, gentle spice and a dry, slightly smoky edge.
- Food Pairing : Kanonkop Pinotage 2023 pairs naturally with bold, savoury dishes. It works particularly well with a traditional South African braai, especially lamb chops or beef steaks, where the wine’s structure and smoky undertones echo the charred flavours. It also complements slow-cooked dishes like oxtail or beef stew, where its depth matches the richness. For something more casual, try it with sticky barbecue ribs or a mushroom-based dish, where the wine’s earthy notes and firm tannins bring balance and intensity.
