Groot Tulbagh is rooted in the Tulbagh Valley, a region set inland from the Cape coast where summer heat is tempered by cool nights and significant diurnal range. These conditions tend to preserve aromatic lift and acidity in red varieties while allowing full flavour ripeness by harvest. The producer’s approach for their Shiraz is straightforward and site‑focused: careful vineyard management to concentrate fruit, selective picking and modest oak handling to support rather than dominate varietal character. The result is a wine that aims to show Shiraz’s peppery, savoury side alongside ripe red and dark-berry fruit - South African fruit ripeness married to a measured, food‑friendly structure. The tone is unpretentious and direct: wines made to be enjoyed at the table rather than showpieces for long cellar life.

Colour:
Bright ruby with a medium depth and a youthful purple rim.

Nose:
Red cherry and raspberry at the fore, with a darker bramble undertow. Characterful notes of cracked black pepper and a hint of dried herbs give a savoury edge; subtle smoke and a touch of spice from oak appear with time in the glass.

Palate:
Medium to medium‑plus body, with juicy red-fruit flavours up front (red cherry, cranberry) moving to darker plum and a touch of blackberry on the mid‑palate. Tannins are fine to medium, offering grip without harshness; acidity is fresh and keeps the wine lifted. The peppery spice and light savoury notes carry through, balancing the fruit and giving the wine a convivial, everyday‑serious personality.

Finish:
Medium length, finishing on spiced red fruit and a dry, slightly savoury note that invites a second glass.

  • Food Pairing : This Shiraz works beautifully with a braai (barbecue) of lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and garlic — the wine’s peppery spice and red‑fruit weight complement the char and fattiness of lamb while the acidity refreshes the palate. It also pairs well with bobotie or other mince‑based Cape stews, where the wine’s fruit and savoury spice echo the dish’s sweet‑savoury spices. For something leaner, chargrilled beef sosaties or a peri‑peri steak match the wine’s spice and mid‑palate body, and mushroom‑based dishes such as an olive‑and‑mushroom tart bring out the wine’s earthy, savoury notes. Finally, a mature Cheddar with rustic bread and pickles makes an easy, comforting match — the salt and texture of the cheese highlight the wine’s fruit and spice without overwhelming it.
  • Drink before: Drink now–2028. Shows approachable fruit now; will gain a little savoury complexity with short‑term ageing but is not intended for very long cellaring.
