Glenelly Glass Collection Syrah 2022
Glenelly Estate sits on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, a site that combines warm ripening days with cooling afternoon breezes and well‑draining, decomposed granite soils — conditions that give Syrah ripe, pure fruit with a touch of freshness and minerality. The estate’s founder, May‑Éliane de Lencquesaing, brought a Bordeaux pedigree and a clear focus on quality and site expression when she established Glenelly; that French influence is balanced by modern South African viticulture and careful cellar work.
Colour:
Deep ruby with purple edges and medium depth, showing youthful clarity.
Nose:
Bright red and dark berry fruit at the forefront — ripe cherry and plum — with lifted floral notes (violet/jasmine), white pepper and a faint garrigue/herb character. Subtle smoke and pepper spice appear with aeration.
Palate:
Medium‑plus body with a smooth, supple texture. The palate delivers red cherry and bramble framed by fine, slightly gripping tannins and a fresh line of acidity. Spicy white‑pepper and a savoury, herbal mid‑palate add complexity; oak influence is supportive rather than overt, contributing toast and structure more than vanilla. The overall impression is poised, varietal and food‑friendly.
Finish:
Medium to long; lingering black/red fruit, peppery spice and a dry, savoury edge that keeps the wine honest and inviting for a second glass.
