Glenelly Glass Collection Merlot 2021
Glenelly Estate sits on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, a pocket long recognised for producing structured, ageworthy reds. The vineyards benefit from decomposed granite soils and cooling afternoon breezes from False Bay, giving Merlot both ripeness and a welcome line of freshness. The estate is owned by May de Lencquesaing, former proprietor of Bordeaux’s Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, and that heritage shows in the style: new-world sunshine with a distinct Bordeaux sensibility. The focus is on sustainable farming, careful fruit selection and thoughtful use of French oak to bring complexity without overwhelming the wine. The Glass Collection range aims for clarity and purity of variety – approachable, well-made Stellenbosch wines that still carry Glenelly’s hallmark refinement.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple rim, medium-plus intensity and good clarity.
Nose:
Plums and dark cherries lead, supported by blackberries and a hint of redcurrant. Behind the fruit, subtle notes of graphite, dried herbs and pencil shavings appear, with gentle vanilla and cocoa from time in oak.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with a smooth, supple texture. The core is ripe plum and black cherry, joined by mulberry and a touch of cassis. Tannins are fine and lightly grippy, giving shape without feeling heavy, while the acidity is fresh enough to keep the wine lively. Savoury hints of tobacco leaf and baking spice add interest without dominating the fruit. Overall, it feels polished, dry and food friendly.
Finish:
Medium to long, with lingering dark fruit, a touch of cocoa and a gentle, dry, slightly spicy edge.
