The Earth Beneath Our Feet project is centred on a simple but thoughtful idea: wines should reflect the vineyards and the growers behind them rather than heavy-handed cellar manipulation. The wines are sourced from carefully selected small vineyard parcels across the Western Cape, with the Cabernet Sauvignon–Merlot blend rooted in Franschhoek, one of South Africa’s historic wine valleys.
Franschhoek’s mountain-framed vineyards benefit from warm daytime sunshine balanced by cooler evening temperatures drifting down from surrounding peaks. This diurnal shift helps red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot ripen fully while maintaining freshness and structure.
For the Earth Beneath Our Feet Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2022, fruit was destemmed and fermented in tank with regular punch-downs to extract colour and flavour, followed by extended maceration to build texture. After fermentation, the wine matured in older oak barrels, allowing gentle development without overwhelming the fruit character.
Colour:
Clear ruby red with youthful purple edges, showing good depth in the glass.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of red cherry and plum lead the way, followed by hints of blackberry, nutmeg and cinnamon spice with a subtle cedar undertone.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and approachable, with supple red and black berry fruit at the core. The Merlot softens the structure while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes fine tannins and gentle grip. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively, with savoury spice and light oak nuances adding complexity.
Finish:
Clean and moderately long, leaving lingering notes of cherry, spice and a touch of cedar.
