Dornier Siren Syrah 2021
Dornier is based in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on the slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain, a cooler subzone known for decomposed granite soils, good drainage and afternoon breezes that slow ripening. This setting suits Syrah, giving concentrated fruit with spice and freshness rather than sheer power. The Siren Syrah is typically made from low-yielding vineyards, with careful sorting, gentle extraction and measured oak maturation to highlight perfume and texture. The aim is a refined, modern Cape Syrah: ripe but not heavy, with a clear line of acidity, fine tannins and a savoury edge that makes it particularly food-friendly.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a purple tint at the rim, showing good concentration.
Nose:
Blackberry, dark cherry and plum lead, layered with black pepper, violets and hints of smoked meat, dried herbs and subtle oak spice.
Palate:
Medium to full bodied with a core of ripe black and red berries framed by fresh acidity. Tannins are fine but present, giving a firm, structured feel without harshness. Pepper spice, olive tapenade and a touch of charcuterie add savoury complexity, while well-judged oak brings gentle vanilla and toast in the background.
Finish:
Longer, with lingering dark fruit, pepper and a savoury, slightly earthy note that tapers off slowly.
- Food Pairing : Dornier Siren Syrah 2021’s combination of ripe fruit, spice and firm yet polished tannins makes it a natural choice for braaied lamb chops, beef ribeye or venison, where the structure can handle char and fat. It shines with hearty dishes like slow-cooked oxtail or beef stew, the wine’s acidity cutting through richness while the savoury notes echo the braise. For something less meaty, try grilled mushrooms with garlic and thyme, smoky aubergine dishes or a lentil and roasted vegetable bake – the Syrah’s pepper and herb tones pick up those earthy, roasted flavours nicely.
