Donkiesbaai Grenache Noir 2024
Donkiesbaai forms part of the Jean Engelbrecht portfolio, with the wines crafted by winemaker Duran Cornhill. While Engelbrecht is best known for Stellenbosch heritage, this range steps outside that footprint, focusing on carefully selected vineyards in regions that suit each varietal.
For the Grenache Noir, fruit is sourced from old bush vines in Piekenierskloof - a high-altitude area known for its sandy soils and warm days tempered by cool nights. These conditions help Grenache ripen fully while retaining freshness and aromatic lift.
The winemaking approach is deliberately hands-off, favouring gentle extraction and minimal oak influence. The goal is clarity over weight - allowing the vineyard to show through in a style that is savoury, balanced, and quietly expressive.
Colour:
Light ruby with a translucent edge, indicating a more delicate extraction.
Nose:
Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry come forward first, followed by hints of dried fynbos, white pepper and a subtle earthy undertone.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a smooth, supple texture. Fine tannins and bright acidity keep the wine focused and fresh, while the fruit remains vibrant and red-fruited. A gentle savoury note adds depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering red fruit and a softly herbal, savoury edge.
- Food Pairing : Donkiesbaai Grenache Noir 2024 is well suited to dishes that echo its balance of freshness and subtle savoury character. It pairs naturally with herb-rubbed lamb chops or slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where the acidity lifts the richness and complements the seasoning. Roast chicken with Mediterranean vegetables or a tomato-based pasta works just as well, bringing out the wine’s red fruit profile, while grilled tuna or line fish offers a lighter option that aligns with its gentle tannins and overall finesse.
