Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2025
Donkiesbaai forms part of the Jean Engelbrecht portfolio, with winemaking led by Duran Cornhill. Inspired by a remote stretch of the West Coast where the Engelbrecht family has holidayed for generations, the range focuses on wines that reflect place, simplicity, and food-friendliness.
The Cinsault is sourced from old bush vines in Piekenierskloof, many planted as far back as the 1960s. These vineyards sit high in the Citrusdal mountains, where sandy soils, dry conditions, and cooling evening winds help produce grapes with natural balance and freshness.
Winemaking follows a minimal intervention approach, including partial whole-bunch fermentation and maturation in older oak. The intention is to preserve the varietal’s natural lightness and aromatic lift rather than build structure through extraction or new wood.
Colour:
Pale ruby, almost translucent, reflecting a lighter, more delicate style of red wine.
Nose:
Fresh red fruit leads - cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate - layered with hints of spice, black tea and subtle earthy notes.
Palate:
Light to medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, gently grippy tannins. The fruit profile remains lively and red-fruited, with a touch of spice and savoury complexity adding depth without weight.
Finish:
Clean and refreshing, with lingering wild strawberry and a lightly spicy, dry finish.
- Food Pairing : Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2025 is naturally suited to relaxed, flavourful dishes where freshness matters. It pairs well with braaied chicken or pork sausages, where the acidity cuts through richness, while its lighter structure complements charcuterie boards and tomato-based pasta. For something closer to its coastal inspiration, try it slightly chilled with grilled line fish or West Coast–style seafood - the wine’s bright fruit and gentle tannins won’t overwhelm more delicate flavours.
