DeMorgenzon DMZ Chardonnay 2024
DeMorgenzon is based in the cooler reaches of the Stellenboschkloof, where higher-altitude slopes, decomposed granite soils and regular sea breezes help Chardonnay ripen with good flavour concentration and natural acidity. This is prime white wine country: enough warmth for ripe stone fruit, but cool enough to keep the wine focused and bright. The DMZ range is DeMorgenzonâs gateway to the estate, made with the same care as the flagship wines but in a more accessible style. Chardonnay fruit is carefully selected and handled to protect freshness, with most of the wine fermented in stainless steel and a portion seeing neutral or older oak and extended lees contact. The aim is texture and subtle complexity, not heavy oak â a clean, modern Stellenbosch Chardonnay that still has depth.
Â
Colour:
Pale straw with a light golden tint and a clear, bright rim.
Â
Nose:
Fresh lemon and ripe yellow apple lead, followed by white peach and a hint of pineapple. Behind the fruit, youâll find subtle notes of biscuit, yoghurt or brioche from lees work, with a light floral lift and a gentle nutty edge rather than obvious vanilla.
Â
Palate:
Medium-bodied, with a lively line of acidity keeping things crisp. Citrus and green apple flow into riper stone fruit, giving both freshness and a touch of succulence. Lees ageing brings a smooth, lightly creamy texture without feeling heavy or buttery. Any oak influence is discreet, showing more as structure and a touch of spice than overt wood. The wine remains dry, precise and well-proportioned.
Â
Finish:
Medium length, with lingering citrus zest, apple skin and a faint savoury, nutty note that keeps the finish clean rather than sweet.
- Food Pairing : This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with seafood, especially grilled fish or prawn dishes, as well as roasted chicken, pasta with creamy sauces, and fresh salads. It also complements mild cheeses like goat cheese or a creamy brie.
