Cavalli Shiraz 2023
Cavalli Wine Estate sits on the lower slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, an area often referred to as the region’s “Golden Triangle” thanks to its ability to produce structured, age-worthy wines. The vineyards benefit from cooling breezes drifting inland from False Bay, helping grapes ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic detail.
The estate’s vineyards are planted in distinctive koffieklip soils - iron-rich, gravelly formations that provide excellent drainage and contribute to the subtle mineral edge found in many Cavalli wines. Winemaker Rianie Strydom focuses on careful vineyard management and thoughtful cellar work, aiming to express site rather than heavy-handed winemaking.
For the Cavalli Shiraz 2023, grapes were hand-harvested in multiple pickings to capture both freshness and ripeness. Fermentation took place in a mix of stainless steel tanks and small open-top fermenters, with a portion of whole clusters included to enhance aromatic complexity. The wine was matured mainly in older French oak barrels to preserve the purity of fruit while adding gentle structure and spice.
Colour:
Deep ruby with youthful purple flashes at the rim.
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, opening with black cherry and blackberry before revealing notes of cracked black pepper, cinnamon and clove. Hints of dark chocolate and subtle oak spice add depth.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth, rounded texture. Dark berry fruit sits alongside savoury spice and a gentle hint of cocoa. Tannins are fine and supportive, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and well defined.
Finish:
Long and warming, leaving lingering notes of black cherry, pepper and soft oak spice.
- Food Pairing : The spice and dark fruit profile of Cavalli Shiraz 2023 makes it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs naturally with Karoo lamb chops on the braai, where the wine’s peppery character echoes the smoky seasoning. A slow-cooked beef brisket or venison potjie also works beautifully, as the wine’s tannins and acidity cut through the richness of the meat. For a weeknight option, try it with grilled aubergine and tomato pasta or a mushroom and rosemary risotto, where the earthy flavours complement the Shiraz’s savoury spice and dark fruit core.
