Carmen Stevens Petit Sirah 2018
Carmen Stevens Wines is a boutique South African producer based in Stellenbosch and neighbouring Paarl, built around the passion of winemaker Carmen Stevens - one of the first Black South African winemakers to graduate and establish a 100% black-owned winery. The estate focuses on expressive, terroir-driven wines from Western Cape vineyards, using meticulous hand-harvesting, careful sorting and modern winemaking techniques that let cultivar character shine. In the case of the Petit Sirah 2018, grapes are sourced from Paarl and raised with thoughtful oak integration that supports ripe fruit depth without overwhelming it, resulting in a wine that’s both bold and balanced.
Colour: Deep ruby-garnet with moderate intensity - a classic sign of Petit Sirah’s darker fruit spectrum.
Nose: A compelling nose of dark chocolate and toffee-caramel melds with liquorice root and warm spice notes. Beneath, there’s a hint of ripe blueberry and gentle cedar from well-integrated oak.
Palate: On the palate, fresh, lime-like acidity gives an initial lift before smooth, supple tannins build. Ripe blueberry fruit unfolds alongside deeper notes of spice and earthy undertones, all supported by a backbone of soft, well-balanced oak.
Finish: The finish is lengthy and engaging, with lingering dark fruit and spice framed by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively right through the last sip.
- Food Pairing : With its bold fruit depth, structured tannins and enlivening acidity, Carmen Stevens Petit Sirah 2018 makes an excellent partner to richly flavoured staples. Serve it alongside braised oxtail or slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where its spice and dark fruit profile complements slow-cooked savoury richness. It also stands up well to barbecue beef ribs with a smoky glaze or a wild mushroom and truffle-oil pasta, where the wine’s acidity refreshes the palate between bites. The interplay of fruit and spice means it can elevate robust dishes without overwhelming them.
- Drink before: Drink now or over the next 5–7 years. The wine’s structured tannins and fresh acidity support medium-term ageing but it is already approachable.
