Canetsfontein Organic Merlot 2020
Canetsfontein is a historic farm in the Bovlei Valley near Wellington, with roots dating back to 1781 and a modern focus on sustainable, organic farming. The estate sits against the backdrop of the Hawequa Mountains, where varied soils - including Oakleaf and Glenrosa - and moderate altitudes contribute to balanced vine growth and flavour concentration.
The farm has evolved into a fully organic operation, avoiding synthetic chemicals and focusing on vineyard health and natural expression. The Organic Merlot 2020 comes from a single vineyard block, with careful canopy management and crop selection used to optimise fruit quality. In the cellar, traditional methods such as open fermentation, gentle extraction, and extended maturation in French oak (18 months) are used to build structure and depth while maintaining varietal clarity.
Colour:
Dark ruby to medium red with a slight garnet edge, showing early development.
Nose:
Ripe raspberry and red berry fruit lead, supported by integrated notes of oak, baking spice, and a subtle earthy undertone.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a fleshy, rounded texture. Soft tannins frame flavours of raspberry, plum, and hints of chocolate, while the oak adds gentle structure without dominating.
Finish:
Smooth and balanced, with lingering red fruit, light spice, and a soft, savoury edge.
- Food Pairing : Canetsfontein Organic Merlot 2020 is well suited to approachable, everyday dishes where its soft tannins and fruit-forward profile can shine. It pairs comfortably with roast chicken or pork, where the wine’s gentle structure complements rather than competes. A classic beef lasagne or tomato-based pasta works well, as the acidity lifts the richness of the dish. For local flavour, it’s an easy match for a relaxed braai with boerewors or grilled chops. It also pairs nicely with semi-hard cheeses, particularly cow’s milk varieties, where the wine’s softness and subtle oak notes find balance.
