Canetsfontein is an organic wine and fruit estate set in the rugged Bainskloof area of the Western Cape, surrounded by mountain slopes, indigenous fynbos and unspoilt natural beauty. The estate’s location in the coastal Cape Floral Kingdom brings warm daytime ripening conditions balanced by cooling mountain air, helping grapes develop flavour while retaining freshness.
The farm’s philosophy is rooted in sustainable agriculture and certified organic farming, with a focus on healthy soils, minimal chemical intervention and honest vineyard expression. The 1781 Bordeaux Blend 2023 reflects this approach, using hand-harvested fruit and traditional cellar methods to craft a polished red blend inspired by Bordeaux, but shaped by South African sunshine and landscape. Each component was matured in oak before final blending, adding depth and texture without losing fruit purity.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge, bright and vibrant in the glass.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of dark cherry, blackcurrant and red berries lead, followed by black pepper, subtle vanilla and gentle spice.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with ripe berry fruit supported by smooth tannins and fresh acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure, Merlot adds softness, and Malbec contributes colour and plush texture. The palate is lively yet composed, with oak adding background complexity.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a savoury dry note.
