Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah 2022
Benguela Cove Wine Estate is situated near Hermanus on the edge of the Walker Bay wine region, where vineyards overlook a coastal lagoon and are heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The estate benefits from one of the longest stretches of ocean-facing vineyards in South Africa, with cool maritime winds moderating temperatures throughout the growing season. This extended ripening period allows grapes to develop flavour complexity while retaining freshness and balance. The Lighthouse Collection celebrates specific vineyard sites that produce wines with vivid fruit expression, softer tannins and early accessibility. Crafted from estate-grown fruit and produced with a minimal-intervention philosophy, the Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah reflects both the elegance of a cool-climate site and the generous fruit character associated with South African Syrah.
Colour: Deep ruby red with vibrant purple highlights.
Nose: Bright aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum are layered with cracked black pepper, fynbos herbs and subtle hints of smoky spice.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with ripe dark fruit at its core. Flavours of blackberries, mulberries and dark cherries are supported by savoury spice, fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. The cool-climate origin brings precision and freshness rather than weight, giving the wine a composed and food-friendly structure.
Finish: Long and gently savoury, with lingering notes of black fruit, pepper spice and dried Mediterranean herbs.
- Food Pairing : Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah 2022 pairs particularly well with flame-grilled lamb chops, Karoo lamb, beef short ribs and slow-roasted pork belly. The wine's combination of dark fruit, peppery spice and moderate tannin structure complements richly flavoured meats while its natural freshness prevents the palate from becoming overwhelmed. It is equally rewarding with venison dishes, mushroom risotto or chargrilled vegetables, where the wine's savoury character and vibrant acidity enhance earthy flavours and roasted textures.
