Bellevue Reserve Cabernet Franc 2023
Perched on the rolling granite slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Bellevue Estate is one of the Cape’s long-standing family wine farms, with winemaking roots that stretch back to the early 1700s. The Bottelary Hills ward is known for its decomposed granite soils, warm days and cooling maritime breezes from False Bay - conditions that allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and structure.
Cabernet Franc has become a quiet speciality of the estate, thriving in these hillside vineyards where careful canopy management and moderate yields help preserve aromatic purity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested and fermented with a focus on gentle extraction before maturation in oak barrels, allowing the varietal’s natural perfume and fine tannins to remain the central feature. The result is a wine that reflects both Stellenbosch structure and the lifted elegance Cabernet Franc is known for.
Colour:
Clear ruby with youthful purple edges, showing moderate depth in the glass.
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, with red cherry, crushed raspberry and blackcurrant leaf leading the way. Subtle notes of dried herbs, graphite, cedar and a hint of violet emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and finely textured. Bright red berry fruit sits alongside savoury notes of tobacco leaf and gentle spice. The tannins are firm but polished, giving structure without heaviness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine energetic and focused.
Finish:
Lingering and savoury, with red fruit, dried herbs and a light graphite edge carrying through the final impression.
- Food Pairing : The structure and herbal nuance of Bellevue Reserve Cabernet Franc 2023 make it a natural partner for flavourful but not overly heavy dishes. It pairs well with grilled lamb chops with rosemary, where the wine’s savoury herbal notes mirror the seasoning. Roast chicken with mushrooms or a mushroom risotto also works beautifully, as the earthy flavours echo the wine’s subtle tobacco and graphite character. For something more casual, a pepper-crusted beef burger or a chargrilled boerewors roll brings out the wine’s bright fruit and supple tannins without overwhelming its medium-bodied style.
