Beau Constantia Aidan 2019
Perched high on the slopes of Constantia Nek, Beau Constantia is one of the Cape’s most dramatic vineyard sites. The estate overlooks False Bay from steep, elevated vineyards where cool ocean influence, strong winds and rocky soils combine to produce wines with natural freshness and structure despite the warm South African climate.
Aidan 2019 reflects both the estate’s mountain terroir and Beau Constantia’s modern, detail-focused approach to winemaking. The fruit was hand-harvested in the cool early morning hours, sorted berry by berry and fermented in small batches before ageing for 18 months in predominantly new French oak. The cooler 2019 growing season and lower yields produced smaller berries with concentrated flavour and refined tannins, resulting in a wine that feels composed, savoury and distinctly Constantia in character.
Colour:
Deep garnet with a dense ruby core and youthful purple edge.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of black cherry, cassis and blackberry are layered with cedar wood, clove and subtle floral notes. Hints of graphite, olive tapenade and dried herbs add savoury complexity beneath the dark fruit profile.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet controlled, with concentrated black fruit supported by polished tannins and fresh acidity. The Syrah brings spice and perfume, Petit Verdot adds structure and grip, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes depth and classic cassis character. Despite the wine’s richness, there is a lifted saline freshness that keeps the palate energetic and focused.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering notes of blackcurrant, spice, fine oak and a distinctive mineral salinity.
- Food Pairing : Beau Constantia Aidan 2019 pairs naturally with richly flavoured dishes that can match its structure and concentration. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder or grilled ribeye work particularly well with the wine’s firm tannins and dark fruit profile, while venison loin or springbok carpaccio complement its savoury spice and mineral character. The freshness in the wine also makes it surprisingly versatile alongside mushroom risotto or aubergine-based dishes, where the acidity and saline edge help balance earthy, creamy flavours without making the pairing feel heavy.
