Avondale Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2016
The Avondale Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2016 comes from Avondale Wine Estate in Paarl, where the vineyards sit on deep, well-drained soils at the foot of the Klein Drakenstein mountains. The region’s warm days are tempered by cooling afternoon breezes, helping Chardonnay retain the acidity and precision needed for traditional-method sparkling wine.
Avondale has built a reputation for farming in harmony with nature, following certified organic and biodynamic principles across the estate. The approach is thoughtful rather than interventionist: healthy soils, balanced vineyards and minimal cellar manipulation are central to the philosophy. Armilla is produced in the traditional method from Chardonnay only, with extended lees ageing adding texture and complexity while preserving the estate’s hallmark freshness and clarity.
Colour:
Pale gold with a fine, persistent mousse and a bright, lively rim in the glass.
Nose:
Lemon zest, green apple and white peach lead the aromatics, followed by baked brioche, roasted almonds and a subtle chalky minerality from extended lees ageing.
Palate:
The palate is precise and energetic, with crisp citrus and stone-fruit flavours balanced by creamy texture and delicate biscuit notes. The acidity keeps the wine focused and dry in style, while the mousse remains refined and gentle rather than aggressive.
Finish:
Long, clean and savoury, finishing with lingering citrus peel, toasted pastry and mineral freshness.
- Food Pairing : The Avondale Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2016 works particularly well with food that balances richness and freshness. Try it with freshly shucked West Coast oysters, tempura prawns or line fish with lemon butter, where the wine’s acidity cuts neatly through richness while echoing the delicate seafood flavours. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, creamy mushroom risotto or a mature Brie-style cheese, as the lees-aged texture and subtle brioche character complement savoury, creamy dishes without overwhelming them.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Enjoy now for freshness and complexity, or cellar for a further 5–8 years under ideal conditions.
