Asara Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc 2023
Asara lies just outside Stellenbosch, on rolling hills with a mix of decomposed granite and clay-rich soils – classic ground for characterful Chenin Blanc. Cooling afternoon breezes help the grapes retain acidity while achieving full flavour ripeness, giving Chenin that can show both freshness and gentle richness. The Vineyard Collection focuses on clear varietal expression and reliable quality, with clean, modern winemaking: cool fermentations, careful handling of the juice and, in many vintages, some lees contact to add texture rather than overt oak flavour. Asara Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc 2023 reflects this approach, offering a dry, fruit-led style that balances New World generosity with a more restrained, food-friendly feel.
Colour:
Pale to medium straw with a light golden tint, bright and clear in the glass.
Nose:
Ripe pear and yellow apple lead, supported by white peach and subtle citrus. Hints of quince, honeysuckle and a gentle, waxy or leesy note add interest without making the wine feel heavy or sweet.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a smooth, rounded texture and lively but not sharp acidity. The palate follows the nose with flavours of pear, baked apple and soft stone fruit, lifted by lemon and a touch of grapefruit pith. There is enough mid-palate weight to feel satisfying at the table, but the wine remains dry and refreshing, with no sticky sweetness. Overall, it’s straightforward, balanced and very drinkable.
Finish:
Medium in length with lingering pear, gentle citrus and a faint savoury, nutty edge.
- Food Pairing : Asara Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc 2023 has both texture and freshness, making it a flexible partner for everyday meals. It’s a natural match for roast chicken or rotisserie birds, where the wine’s stone fruit and gentle weight suit crispy skin and pan juices. It works well with grilled pork chops and apple, creamy chicken or seafood pasta, and mildly spiced Cape Malay curries where the acidity keeps the dish feeling light. For simpler fare, think fishcakes with tartar sauce, butternut and feta salad, or a cheese board with young Gouda and Cheddar – the balance of fruit, body and acidity keeps everything in comfortable harmony.
