Founded in 1700, Vergelegen Wine Estate sits at the foot of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where cooling maritime influences from False Bay help produce wines with both richness and freshness. The estate's diverse soils and carefully selected vineyard sites allow each variety to express its own character. The Reserve Merlot is sourced from north- and north-west-facing vineyard blocks with higher clay content, helping the vines cope with warm growing conditions while producing grapes of excellent concentration. Hand-harvested fruit undergoes gentle extraction before spending 12 months maturing in a combination of 225L and 300L French oak barrels. The result is a polished Merlot that balances ripe fruit with subtle oak influence and refined structure.
Colour: Deep ruby with youthful purple highlights and excellent clarity.
Nose: Ripe plum and black cherry lead the aromas, followed by dark chocolate, mulberry and subtle hints of nutmeg, cedar and sweet spice.
Palate: Generous and silky, with layers of juicy black plum, dark berries and cocoa supported by fine, well-integrated tannins. The oak adds gentle notes of vanilla and baking spice without overshadowing the fruit, while fresh acidity keeps the wine poised and elegant.
Finish: Long and smooth, leaving lingering flavours of dark fruit, chocolate and delicate spice.

Pair it with slow-cooked beef stew, mushroom risotto, grilled lamb cutlets or a classic tomato-based pasta, where the wine's ripe fruit and supple tannins complement savoury richness without overwhelming the dish. It also works beautifully with mature Cheddar or Gouda, whose nutty, savoury flavours echo the wine's subtle oak spice and chocolate notes.
