The High Road Directors Reserve 2021
The High Road is a boutique Stellenbosch winery established in 2003, dedicated to producing handcrafted, limited-release Bordeaux-style wines. Situated in one of South Africa's premier wine regions, the vineyards benefit from Stellenbosch's diverse soils, warm sunny days and cooling maritime influences, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure. The estate follows a meticulous, hands-on approach from vineyard to bottle, with careful fruit selection and extended maturation in French oak. The result is a collection of wines that combine classic Old World structure with the generous fruit expression of the Cape.
Colour: Deep garnet with an intense, youthful core and excellent colour concentration.
Nose: Expressive aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blueberry and dark cherry are layered with pencil shavings, cedar, cigar box and subtle dried Italian herbs, creating a complex and inviting bouquet.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied, the palate delivers concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum flavours. Fine-grained tannins provide impressive structure without heaviness, while vibrant acidity keeps the wine focused and elegant. Twenty months in French oak contributes notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and gentle spice that complement rather than dominate the fruit.
Finish: Long, persistent and savoury, finishing with lingering black fruit, cedar, dried herbs and refined oak spice.
- Food Pairing : The High Road Director's Reserve 2021 is an excellent match for premium cuts of beef, roast lamb with rosemary, venison loin or slow-braised beef short ribs. Its firm tannin structure and concentrated fruit complement richly flavoured meats, while the fresh acidity keeps each mouthful balanced. Mature Cheddar, GruyĂšre or a well-aged Gouda also make excellent companions, with the wine's cedar, tobacco and dark fruit notes adding depth to the pairing.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Drink from 2027 onwards, with excellent ageing potential through 2038 under ideal cellaring conditions.
