Opstal Chenin Blanc 2025
Nestled in the Slanghoek Valley in the Breedekloof wine region, Opstal Estate has been farmed by the Louw family for seven generations. Surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, the vineyards enjoy warm summer days tempered by cool evening air, creating ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Chenin Blanc is the cornerstone of the estate, accounting for almost a third of its vineyards and showcasing the diversity of the valley's sandstone, shale and clay-rich soils. The Opstal Chenin Blanc 2025 is crafted from fruit grown across several vineyard sites on the estate, each contributing its own character. After a short period of skin contact, the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation, with a portion fermented in barrels and large French oak foudres and the balance in concrete and stainless-steel tanks. Maturation on the lees for six months adds texture and subtle complexity while preserving the vibrant fruit that defines this cool, expressive Chenin Blanc.
Colour: Pale straw with youthful green highlights and brilliant clarity.
Nose: Lifted aromas of pineapple, ripe pear and citrus are complemented by subtle floral notes, gentle spice and a delicate lees-derived complexity.
Palate: Bright and energetic, with flavours of juicy pineapple, crisp pear and lemon zest layered over a rounded, textured palate. Fresh natural acidity keeps the wine lively, while the time spent on the lees adds weight without diminishing its freshness.
Finish: Clean and persistent, finishing with lingering citrus, stone fruit and a subtle savoury note that invites another sip.
- Food Pairing : Opstal Chenin Blanc 2025 is wonderfully suited to grilled chicken, pork belly, fresh seafood, creamy pasta dishes and mild Thai curries. Its vibrant acidity cuts through richer flavours while the wine's textured palate complements creamy sauces and roasted meats. It also pairs beautifully with a summer braai, where its bright fruit and freshness balance smoky grilled flavours without overpowering the food.
