La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Although La Motte Wine Estate is based in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, the fruit for the La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is sourced from carefully selected vineyards in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's most respected regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated close to False Bay, these vineyards benefit from cooling maritime influences that help preserve freshness while allowing the grapes to develop depth and concentration. The vineyards are planted on weathered granite and shale soils with pockets of coffee-stone gravel, providing excellent drainage and encouraging balanced vine growth. Sustainable vineyard practices and careful fruit selection underpin La Motte's philosophy of expressing site and variety with clarity. After fermentation, the wine matured for 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, one-third of which were new, adding subtle complexity while allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon character to remain at the forefront.
Colour: Deep ruby with youthful garnet highlights and excellent clarity.
Nose: Ripe blackberry, cassis and dark plum lead the aromatics, followed by notes of clove, mint, cedar, cigar box and a gentle touch of oak spice.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a generous core of dark berry fruit supported by fine, structured tannins and fresh natural acidity. The oak is well integrated, adding savoury complexity without dominating the fruit. A distinct mineral edge brings freshness and precision.
Finish: Long and composed, leaving lingering notes of blackcurrant, subtle spice, cedar and dried herbs.
- Food Pairing : La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is an excellent partner for grilled rib-eye steak, rosemary lamb chops, slow-cooked beef stew, venison pie or roasted mushrooms with thyme. The wine's firm tannins and fresh acidity comfortably handle richer cuts of meat, while its dark fruit and savoury spice complement smoky braai flavours, earthy vegetables and slow-cooked dishes without overwhelming them. Mature Cheddar or a well-aged Gouda also makes an enjoyable pairing for a relaxed evening.
