Glenwood Grand Duc Syrah 2024
Nestled in the Franschhoek Valley, GlenWood Vineyards is a small, family-owned estate known for producing handcrafted wines in limited quantities. The estate's vineyards benefit from the valley's cool mountain influences, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and elegance. The Grand Duc range represents GlenWood's flagship wines, made only from the estate's finest fruit. The Syrah is sourced from the estate's single Syrah vineyard, where careful vineyard management and selective harvesting ensure excellent fruit concentration. Fermentation includes a proportion of whole bunches to enhance aromatic complexity, before the wine is matured for around 20 months in carefully selected French and American oak barrels, creating a Syrah that combines richness with finesse.
Colour: Deep garnet with a youthful ruby rim.
Nose: Lifted aromas of blackberry, ripe plum and black cherry are layered with cracked black pepper, violets, subtle oak spice and a touch of fynbos.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with a velvety texture and fine, polished tannins. Concentrated dark berry fruit is complemented by savoury spice, liquorice and gentle oak, while fresh acidity keeps the wine focused and balanced.
Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering notes of black fruit, pepper, sweet spice and a subtle earthy character.
- Food Pairing : GlenWood Grand Duc Syrah 2024 is an excellent partner for grilled Karoo lamb chops, slow-roasted beef brisket or pepper-crusted fillet, where its dark fruit and savoury spice complement richly flavoured meats. It also pairs beautifully with venison pie, mushroom risotto or flame-grilled aubergine, while its fresh acidity and refined tannins provide enough structure to balance richer dishes without overpowering them. Mature Gouda or a well-aged Cheddar also make rewarding companions as the wine opens in the glass.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Drink now or cellar for 5â8 years, with further development of savoury complexity and integration.
