Cape of Good Hope forms part of the Anthonij Rupert Wines portfolio, with a focus on site-specific expressions from distinctive vineyards across the Western Cape. The Riebeeksrivier farm, set on the slopes of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland, is one of its most characterful sources. This is a warm, dry region, but altitude (350-400m) and south-facing slopes help retain freshness, while the shale-rich soils contribute structure and a subtle savoury edge. The Caroline blend draws clear inspiration from the Rhone Valley, combining Mediterranean varieties like Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier with Chenin Blanc and Piquepoul Blanc. The latter, rarely seen in South Africa, brings natural acidity and lift to the blend. Winemaking follows a thoughtful, low-intervention approach: whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation, and ageing on the lees in a mix of stainless steel and older French oak. The aim is not overt richness, but layered texture and balance - allowing both site and blend to speak clearly. Colour: Bright straw with a subtle golden tint, indicating both ripeness and time on lees. Nose: Roasted stone fruit leads - peach, nectarine and apricot - alongside hints of citrus peel. Gentle spice, a touch of floral lift, and a faint nutty note add complexity. Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a layered, textural feel. Stone fruit and citrus carry through, supported by a fresh, zesty acidity. A subtle grapefruit edge and lees-driven creaminess add depth without heaviness, keeping the wine structured and composed. Finish: Long and refined, with lingering citrus, soft spice, and a gently savoury, mineral note.
