Every week we aim to bring you a panellist’s favourite wine from their Monday night tasting. This week Irina van Holdt shares hers
Vrede en Lust Artisan Range – Kogelberg Chenin Blanc 2011
Why Irina liked it:
Whew! The names of wines get longer and longer! Loved this wine, (it had to be a Chenin, didn’t it?) because it shows just how beautifully Chenin can age. A deep, golden yellow with ripe stone fruit aromas and enough oak to back it up. On the palate rich and ripe but with a clean acidity, which is Chenin’s signature. Refined and complex, this was an essay in refinement and class – keep the good Chenin’s they’ll reward you richly
I loved this tasting, especially the older Chenins, but a 2011 vintage could hardly be described as ‘old’. Even five years is relatively young. We liked the 2011s because they showed such beautiful development and the Vrede en Lust because it’s such a good example of Chenin. The varietal character with its honey and blossom notes had mellowed to chamomile tea and rich complexity. Stunning!
